How to Use Human Psychology to Understand Others

Human psychology can be difficult to understand if you’re not familiar with the subject. The human brain often seems illogical, and the variety of psychological disorders are confusing at best, but if you take the time to get a better understanding of how your brain works, you’ll be able to see the world in a new way—one that will give you an advantage over those around you. These tips will help you get started on your new knowledge of human psychology.

What is Psychology?

Psychology is the study of human behavior, the mind, and mental processes. It’s a social science that seeks to understand individuals as well as groups by observing their behavior. The word psychology comes from Greek words meaning soul (psyche) and study (logia). Human psychology is the branch of psychology that studies how humans behave.

The Scientific Method

1) Observation- what do you see?
2) Formulate the Question- why do you see it?
3) Research- find out what else there is about your question
4) Experiment- try different things and see how they work. 5) Analysis- discuss your findings with others, think critically and make a conclusion based on all of this.
6) Action Plan- use what you learned to help yourself or others in the future

Theories of Personality

The personality theories of the Big Five model, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), Socionics, and the Enneagram provide a framework for understanding how people interact with others. The Big Five theory categorizes personality traits using five traits: openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. MBTI is a self-reporting test that measures psychological preferences in different areas; it’s based on Jungian philosophy.

Psychodynamic Theory

One of the most influential psychological theories is psychodynamic theory. Developed by Sigmund Freud in the early 1900s, this theory focuses on how individuals interact with their environment, themselves and other people.

The theory states that we are driven by a complex set of impulses, including sexual and aggressive urges which may be hidden from our consciousness but have a huge impact on our behaviour. In order to understand ourselves or others, we need to explore these unconscious impulses that affect us.

Behaviorism

A psychological school of thought that deals with observable behavior as a means of understanding mental processes. Behaviorism is a somewhat controversial topic in psychology, with many psychologists criticizing the limitations of behaviorism, such as how it ignores underlying mental causes for behaviors.

Cognitive Theory

The cognitive theory was created by George Miller in 1956. It is the idea that information processing limits our ability to process a lot of information at one time. Miller’s theory suggests that people have a limited capacity for mental activities, so they need this limit or else it could lead to over-stimulation. This also helps us understand how people can react differently when exposed to the same stimulus.

Social Psychology

One of the most popular areas in social psychology is interpersonal attraction. This area explores how people are drawn to each other, how they influence one another, how they form relationships, and how they communicate with one another. A lot of research has been done on attraction and what makes someone attractive or unattractive.

For example, one study found that women are attracted to men who are taller than them but not too much taller. It’s also important for a man to be more successful than her; otherwise she will see him as a potential competitor. Women are also attracted to men with symmetrical faces because it signals genetic health and wellness. People have preferences when it comes to physical attributes like height and face shape, which is normal!

Developmental Psychology

Human psychology is the study of how people think, feel, and behave. Developmental psychologists are interested in how human development unfolds over the lifespan. Developmental psychologists are interested in learning about children’s development across many different areas, including physical, social-emotional, language development, cognitive development, moral reasoning skills, personality traits, and mental health issues. Developmental psychology is a subfield of psychology that studies children’s growth as they grow up.

Abnormal Psychology

The field of abnormal psychology focuses on the study of mental health disorders. This is a broad term that encompasses everything from depression to schizophrenia, but it also includes personality disorders. These disorders can have a profound effect on an individual’s life, but this does not mean that they cannot be treated. The most common types of treatment for these types of disorders are psychotherapy, medication, and self-help programs.
