First death anniversary of Moin Akhtar, one of the most beloved comics and actors ever to grace the stage and television screens of Pakistan, has been observed yesterday.

Moin Akhtar was born on 24 December 1950 in Karachi. Moin was highly dynamic and versatile performer, he made his debut for television on 6 September 1966, in a variety show held on PTV to celebrate the first defense day of Pakistan‎. Since then, he has performed several roles in TV plays/shows, later making a team with Anwar Maqsood and Bushra Ansari.

He was beloved for providing humor for people of all ages, and with an etiquette that remains unmatched. His attempts to avoid vulgarity in his humor rendered him a favourite amongst family audiences. Akhtar was fluent in several languages, including English, Bengali, Sindhi, Punjabi, Memon, Pashto, Gujarati and Urdu. He performed not only in Pakistan but played in several stage shows like Bakra Qiston Pe and Buddha Ghar Pe Hai with Umer Sharif in India too.

A case has been registered against Farooq Bhoja, the owner of Bhoja Air, in Koral Police Station.

According to sources, the case has been registered (under section 302, 427, 109, 120-B, 286 and 287) under the supervision of Station House Officer (SHO) of Koral Police Station, Mehboob Ahmed.

FIA deputy director said appropriate action would be taken against Farooq Bhoja after instructions have been made.

Earlier, Interior Minister Rehman Malik said that Farooq Bhoja had been put on the exit control list (ECL), meaning he can’t leave Pakistan. Such a ban is often put on someone suspected or implicated in a criminal case.

A Bhoja Air passenger jet crashed Friday as it came to land in Islamabad, killing all 127 people on board.

نیپرا نے بجلی کے نرخوں میں ایک روپے 67 پیسے یونٹ اضافے کا نوٹی فکیشن جاری کر دیا۔ بل میں بجلی چوری کے شامل دو پیسے نکال دیے جائیں گے۔ اطلاق آئندہ ماہ کے بلوں پر ہو گا۔

بجلی کی قیمتوں میں اضافہ ماہانہ فیول ایڈجسٹمنٹ کے تحت ستمبر دوہزار گیارہ کے لیے کیا گیا ہے۔ گزشتہ سال ستمبر میں نیپرا نے 1 روپے 76 پیسے فی یونٹ اضافے کی منظوری دی تھی۔ رینٹل پاور پلانٹس کے خلاف سپریم کورٹ کے فیصلے کے بعد فی یونٹ بجلی کی لاگت کے 8 پیسے نکال دیے گئے جبکہ بجلی چوری کی مد میں وصول کیے جانے والے دو پیسے بھی اب نہیں لیے جائیں گے۔

The NEPRA on Tuesday has issued notification of increase in power tariff by Rs 1.67 per unit.

New tariff will go into effect next month. The increase has been announced as per monthly fuel adjustment for September 2011.

Last year, NEPRA had approved increase in power tariff by RS 1.76 per unit in September.

After the Supreme Court decision against the rental power plants, Rs 0.8 had been reduced from the per unit cost of production while Rs 0.2 being charged in the head of power theft will not be charged anymore.

ISLAMABAD: The budget paper prepared by the Finance Ministry has identified five major challenges for the next year’s federal budget, Geo News reported Tuesday.

According to the paper, the challenges confronted in the current fiscal year will have to be faced in the next year’s budget as well.

The biggest challenge the paper points at is the phenomenon of steady rise in the international oil prices.

The second challenge cited by the paper is the energy crisis which it said would continue to plague the country in the coming fiscal.

It said the losses being incurred by the government in power sector are playing havoc with the economic planning of the country, adding the government had wasted one trillion rupees in power sector losses.

Slowdown in flow of funds from foreign countries and financial institutions was listed as the third major challenge, as the promises in Kerry Lugar bill and pledges made in connection with war on terror were not met.

In the current fiscal only Rs35 billion flowed in from foreign sources against the projected amount of Rs120 billion.

Irregularities in government departments are the fourth biggest challenge while the fifth is foreign debt servicing and rupee devaluation, the paper said.

KARACHI: Doctors in Pakistan are fighting to save the life of a baby boy born with six legs because of a rare genetic condition, hospital officials said Monday.

The infant was born to the wife of an X-ray technician a week ago, Jamal Raza, the director of National Institute of the Child Health in Karachi, told reporters.

“It is not one baby actually. They are two, one of them is premature,” he said.

A doctor at the institute who did not wish to be named said the extra limbs were the result of a genetic disease which would affect only one in a million or more babies.

“The doctors are examining the infant to plan for necessary treatment to save the baby’s life and ensure he lives a normal life,” said a statement from the provincial health department.

Imran Shaikh, the baby’s father who lives in Sukkur, around 450 kilometres (280 miles) north of Karachi, said he was grateful his son was being treated.

“We are a poor family. I am thankful to the government for helping us

treating my baby,” he told the media. (AFP)
